Tirta Empul Temple is the real name of the temple and its water springs. But more peole prefer calling it Tampaksiring. According to the legend of the local, this spring was created when the Lord of Heaven Indra had to fight against a demon King Maya Denawa. And his blow the pierced earth then created the springs. The spring of Tirta empul are believed to be sacred, so it is not allowed for the people to bathe there. But in the lower part of the temple there are several both places for bathing. According to stone document that read by DR. Stut Berheim this temple was built in 960 AD.
Close to the springs on a hill, there is a palace of the first presiden of Indonesia Sukarno and formerly was the rest house of Dutch Colonial officers. Tampak Siring is also famous for bone carvings, hanger's key that made of wood.
The visitors are crowded enough either domesic or foregn visitors.
